After two slopingsveldtogte for a world exhibition in 1913 and an administrative center that was never built in the 60s, the Gent's historic center for decades turned into a deserted parking lot between three adjacent Gothic towers. The city council has decided to launch a competition to keep the space restored to its former glory. A local practice, Robbrecht and Daem architects, in collaboration with MJosé Van Hee architects bit of their own program suggested going beyond the competition brief to not only open space for functions and the public vgm to create, but also the presence of traditional architectural highlight.
The building is positioned between Poeljemarkt, the Golden Lion, and a new lower green area that connects to the 'brasserie', bike park and public toilets under the saddle. Although the building is clearly a position on the 24,000 m2 site covers, it fits well. As an urban interiors embrace inside the passerby with an overall memory of the vernacular of the area and time, dressed in natural wood tiles covered by a thin layer of glass that subtle air on the surface reflects. Four large columns hoist the steep-pointed-hood structure above the ground, a deep interior space lit with hundreds of open fissures in the roof. The second level contains under a market square next to a green area, integrated vgm with the multi-use hall.
The outside, actually the whole building seems a respectable role in relation to the noble historic stone buildings by use of a wooden, almost humble, finish. A glass envelope protects the wood and provides a soft shine the light that is reflected. Large buffer basins rain water absorb principles of low energy consumption for the brassiere, the use of truly natural material, the contribution of public transport and a clear vision of the new value of the historic center with its old spatial structures, only parts the broad flesh of 'sustainability' for the future part. The center of Ghent will be quite a social place for people.
