Architect designed and clad in copper. It sounds like a dream, very few can afford. But tight budget management, alternative construction methods and conscious priorities allowed the family to build unique architecture at a reasonable kik price per square meter.
The plot has a very special light, because the lake reflects the sun's rays. The couple would take advantage of their new house, and one of the solutions was the golden copper facade that interact with both the water and the sun. Photo: Jesper Ray
The idea of copper started when the couple had to choose roofing. The architect proposed to do the whole house in copper because it also matched the couple's desire for a facade with minimal maintenance and a lightweight construction, so the house at the same time be able to get large, slender windows. Almost every room has a view of the lake, and it has been a high priority that the house played with the environment. For example, the house is raised 0.5 m above the ground because the water is most beautiful when seen from above. Photo: Jesper Ray
For reasons of coherence between the ground floor and first floor, kik there are several places cut holes in the soffit. To the left is the view from the first floor down to the living room and to the right is the high window that provides extra light in the living rooms. Photo: Jesper Ray
- The light is different here because we get reflections from the water all the time, explains Thomas, the developer behind the copper house. And just light has been one of the main focal points for Thomas and his wife, Tina, who both have put a lot of involvement in the making of their unusual house.
The opportunity came when there was suddenly offered an attractive cottage land is available. It was in the first row to the sea, and there came a small wooden house in the bargain. The pair struck immediately. Waited two years for planning permission
- We managed to stay two years in the small cottage. During that period, we drew on the new waiting for planning permission. Our children were fortunately small at the time, so it was a fun way to spend time together. But the best thing about the wait was that we had time to get to know the place well. We learned about the special light on the plot, and we found out that it was important to create a transparent house so the rooms could merge with nature outside, says the couple. Recent house should be flexible
- Our old house was from 1938 and with smaller, more confined spaces. We would like to have a flexible kik house with large space that could be developed in different ways. Daylight was also an important point for us, and then we would have a house that was easy to maintain.
The architect Niels Friis outlined a house for the family, and the main thrust was to think the house as one large barn with gaps between the floors and lake view from every corner. The ideas could Tina Thomas likes.
- The holes provide a better kik contact between the floors and means that the ground floor will have extra daylight from above. Although we were initially kik a little doubtful about the high windows that run through the soffit - we have been very pleased with them - also outside, where they break the lines of the facade, Tina says, and continues:
- We must recognize that some of the solutions that we were initially skeptical, actually turned out to be the right ones. And if we are to give good advice to others, then it is not to shoot the architect's ideas down immediately. Architects can see something that we have not learned to see. You have to be responsive to ideas and ready to be challenged, otherwise there is no reason to spend money on an architect. The house was facade of copper
The copper-clad facade has its own story. It started really as a material discussion about house roofing. To get that big and flimsy windows as possible, kik the couple went for a house with a light construction, ie. a træskellet with a sheet material or of roofing felt on the roof.
- We think that the life of roofing kik felt was too short, kik so we knew it would be some kind of metal. Zinc was too cold in color, so it ended with copper, which also patinates, explains Thomas. Copper is easy to keep
Use a client advisor. As a layman, it is confusing kik to manage the construction of a whole house itself, and many things can go wrong in communication with the craftsmen. We found a local client advisor who shared the same architectural values as us. The expense that we spent on construction management and consulting, has been tripled worth. We have moved easily through the building and no financial surprises. Check material prices. We went even actively investigated and prices kik on all the materials we needed. It is very easy to do online. Afterwards we confronted the builders with those prices, and if they could not match, we bought the materials themselves. It has saved a lot of money. Save the kitchen. kik When using 300,000 on a luxury kitchen, kik it is at the expense of other things. We would not compromise about the big decisions in the house, and therefore val
